The Problem:

75% of all chronic disease has been found to be caused by 4 modifiable risk factors of excess:

•Calories

•Stress

•Physical inactivity

•Environmental toxin exposure (to include tobacco use)

There are powerful economic forces that give you what you want, but not what you need. A good example of this are big food manufacturers having the brightest minds in flavor engineering on their payroll with their very purpose to make processed foods more addictive. In other words, your brain in hijacked making it very difficult to put the food down when a modest consumption is all that you really should be eating. Eating is a cultural phenomenon, especially here in Hawaii. Gatherings of family, friends and community nearly always involves food of some sort. And don’t forget the leftovers. Making plates to bring home is a common theme. Food has also become incredible convenient. Fast food, gas stations, restaurants and grocery stores provide an abundance of calories on nearly every street corner.

The consequence of these diseases of excess are associated with the epidemic rise and early onset of chronic disease to include obesity, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, autoimmune disease and certain types of cancer.

We known that smoking is addictive, that heroin and cocaine are addictive, and that alcohol can be addictive. But we don’t often think about how artificially concentrated foods packed with added sugar, oil and salt can act just like drugs by over-stimulating the reward centers in our brains. But large food processing companies understand how this works, and they put a lot of effort into designing products thqt activate this addiction-like reaction and keep us coming back for more.”
